2. External Combustion Engine (ECE)

In this type, fuel is burned outside the engine to heat a working fluid (usually water), which turns into steam that drives a piston or turbine.

  • Example: Steam engine.
  • Common Uses: Historical trains, steamships, early industrial machinery.

  • Cylinder: Chamber where energy is converted into motion.
  • Piston: Moves up and down in the cylinder to create motion.
