2025 Volvo EX90 Review: Scandinavian Luxury, Electrified and Redefined

Introduction: Volvo’s Electric Future Begins with Confidence

Volvo debuts the 2025 EX90 as its first purpose-built electric SUV, setting a new standard in sustainable luxury. Built from the ground up on a dedicated EV platform, the EX90 doesn’t just replace the XC90—it reimagines what a flagship SUV can be in an all-electric world.

Performance: Power and Precision in Every Drive

Volvo equips the EX90 with two dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrains:

  • Twin Motor Plus produces 402 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque, propelling the SUV from 0–60 mph in 5.7 seconds.
  • Twin Motor Performance boosts output to 510 hp and 671 lb-ft, reaching 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. It also tows up to 4,850 pounds with confidence.

A 107-kWh usable battery enables up to 310 miles of range. Drivers can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes thanks to 250-kW DC fast charging. On the road, the EX90 delivers seamless acceleration and a smooth, commanding ride.

Design: Elegant Simplicity with an Electric Identity

Volvo refines its Scandinavian design language for the EV era. The EX90’s clean profile features a sealed front fascia, signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED lighting, and flush door handles. Frameless mirrors and a roof-mounted LiDAR module add futuristic flair without overwhelming the silhouette.

The SUV rides on 20-inch wheels standard, with available 22-inch alloys on higher trims. Its understated elegance appeals to drivers who prefer sophistication over flash.

Comfort and Space: Designed for Modern Families

Volvo prioritizes comfort and versatility in the EX90. With seating for up to seven, second-row passengers enjoy excellent legroom and available integrated child booster seats. The third row, ideal for children or short trips, folds flat to expand cargo capacity.

  • Cargo space behind the third row: 10.9 cu. ft.
  • Maximum cargo with seats down: 67.6 cu. ft.
  • Frunk storage: 1.6 cu. ft.

Tall door openings and flat floors enhance ease of entry and loading. Whether hauling gear or passengers, the EX90 handles both with grace.

Technology and Infotainment: Smart, Seamless, Scandinavian

Volvo delivers tech that feels helpful, not overwhelming. The EX90 offers:

  • Google built-in for navigation, voice control, and apps
  • OTA updates to enhance functionality over time
  • Premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system with headrest speakers (Ultra trims)
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay (via update post-launch)

Unlike rivals that rely solely on touchscreens, Volvo preserves tactile controls for climate and audio, enhancing user comfort and safety.

Safety: Volvo’s Most Advanced System Yet

Volvo sets new safety benchmarks with the EX90. Using LiDAR, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and an interior driver monitoring system, the SUV watches both the road and the driver.

Key features include:

  • Pilot Assist with lane change and adaptive cruise
  • Intersection collision avoidance
  • Driver unresponsiveness auto-brake
  • Advanced rear cross-traffic alert

Volvo doesn’t just promise zero fatalities—it actively designs for it.

Ride Quality: Smooth, Composed, Quiet

The EX90 glides over roads with refined poise. Higher trims use air suspension and adaptive damping for cloud-like comfort. Inside, the cabin remains whisper-quiet—even at highway speeds—thanks to excellent insulation and aerodynamic design.

While the Performance variant delivers brisk acceleration, the SUV’s tuning emphasizes comfort and confidence over aggressive handling. It’s not a performance EV—it’s a sanctuary on wheels.

Pricing and Trims: Flagship Value, Scandinavian Style

Volvo offers four trims:

  • Twin Motor Plus – $81,290
  • Twin Motor Ultra – $85,640
  • Twin Motor Performance Plus – $86,290
  • Twin Motor Performance Ultra – $90,640

Each EX90 includes four years of Volvo’s Care Offer, which bundles scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance, and digital services. U.S. deliveries begin late 2024, built in Volvo’s South Carolina plant.

Pros and Cons

✅ Pros

Final Verdict: A Scandinavian Flagship for the Electric Era

The 2025 Volvo EX90 makes a confident, sophisticated statement. With its blend of quiet power, elevated tech, next-generation safety, and timeless Scandinavian style, the EX90 redefines what a flagship electric SUV should be.

For drivers seeking a premium, sustainable, and serene family SUV, Volvo’s all-electric EX90 checks every box—with elegance and ease.
